Would you name your baby the most popular name in the US?

My favorite name for a boy has always been Jacob. I wanted to call him Jake for short. Of course, it's now the most popular name in America and has been for years. My husband and I are having a very hard time coming up with a name we both like for our son, who is due in just under 2 months. We both like really like Jacob, but I'm very hesitant because of it's popularity. So... if your favorite name became #1, would you still use it???

Would you name your baby the most popular name in the US?
I probably wouldn't. My name is Nicole which was the 7th most popular name in america when I was born, which was 1985. My sisters are Ashley and Lauren which were also VERY common and we all wished we had less common names. I had to be called "Nicole Petto" all the time because there were at least 6 girls in my class of 2004 with that name. The same would happen with your son. I suppose if you don't like any other names, then I would go with Jacob but I still suggest a less common name just so your son wouldn't get sick of it.
Reply:I have mixed feelings about that.

I really liked the name Hailey for a girl but I didn't want to name her that because every other little girl is a Hailey lol but now I'm regretting it.

If you really like that name and are set on it and the only problem is it's too popular I think you should do it anyway, you might regret it later when the other name you pick out isn't perfect.
Reply:With the recent trend of people wanting to give their children more unusual names the top names don't work out to being as many children as you would guess.

Yes, if you name your son Jacob he's going to know a few other boys with the same name. But if you and your husband really love the name that much then don't let it's popularity stop you.

Good luck!

P.S. In response to "........ (:" that wouldn't necessarily be the case. The top 10 names only represent a fraction of the newborn population.
Reply:I feel your pain! I absolutely love Jacob. Sadly we have decided not to use it specifically because it is so popular. Both my husband and I have extremely popular for the time names, and didn't want that for our Children.

That being said, it is the number 1 name for a reason so if you love it and your husband loves it then I think you should use it.
Reply:Hi,

If you still like it then go for it. I called my son Caden and all of a sudden it now looks like he will be one of many Cadens when he starts school!!

I also like Olivia, Milly for girls and Jacob and Joshua for boys - which seems to be popular too but I still like them!

I say if many other parents calling their child same name, it just means that they got great taste like you!!

You could still call him Jacob but maybe change the spelling - Jakub, Jaycob, Jacub ect.

But personally, I say call him JACOB!!

Lx
Reply:Mine is a definite NO! You may like it but your child has to live with it. Making it the most common name means that for his whole school career he will be Jacob 1, 2, 3, or A, B, C, or the kids nickname him, yuk! I named my son Michael and for 38 yrs it has been in the top 5 names usually in 1 st or second, It was awful! Use it for a middle name! Good Luck!
Reply:I probably wouldn't because all thoughtout school I had to go by Ashley H because of how popular my first name been.

Reply:No. A child's name reflects the parents' intellect and creativity, and I wouldn't want to be viewed as dull or insipid.

However, I also think I wouldn't have too difficult a time finding an alternative name; I'm rarely dead set on anything. Crack open a few of my favourite books or plays, and I'm sure I'd find one.
Reply:yes if you like enough go for it!

Reply:If you really really like it, so what. Name him what you like. If you don't want him to have a common name for his age group than use it as a middle name and pick a different one for first name. Personally, if I really wanted to use a name I would.
Reply:If you like it than that is all that matters, I love the names Isabel (it is in the top 10 I think) and if my husband and I can't come up with another name than that is what we are going to name our first daughter.
Reply:I dont think i would because me i am 35 weeks and i want a baby girl to have a name that no one really has but that is me if you and your husband really like that name then go for it

Congrats
Reply:ive dont a lot of research and always came up with Aiden as the most popular boy name the last couple of years. and beggining of 09. so i would carry on with jacob. its a classic name! very nice and strong
Reply:i live in america. that name is not all that popular. i love the name zachary, if that became the next aiden i probably would still use it
Reply:I would not use it for a first name, but I also like the name and think it would make a good middle name. That way you could give him a diffrent first name but still call him Jake if you like !
Reply:What makes the difference? It is your baby and you obviously love the name. Call your boy Jacob. It's a beautiful name.
Reply:I would use it if I loved it enough. Another alternative could be to use Jacob as the middle name and find something else as a first name. The best of both worlds! Good luck!
Reply:If you can't find anything else, then just use it. It's popular for a reason. That being said, no, I would not personally use the #1 name.
Reply:I think Emma is #2 and I still named my daughter Emma. I wouldn't worry about it.
Reply:i would not care either way. if i loved the name i would used it anyways. yes i would use it why does it matter.
Reply:If I like the name I will use it.
Reply:I wouldnt care as long as I liked the name!
Reply:My cousin named her baby Emma which I think is in the top 3. She didn't care and I don't think it should matter much.
Reply:Yes. i know 1 Jakob
