Would you name your children an extremely popular name that tons of childre have if you liked it?

I love the name Ava but everyone has it so I can't decide.

Would you name your children an extremely popular name that tons of childre have if you liked it?
I've never heard the name "Ava", but anyway we named our daughter a popular name. We're happy with the name, so the popularity or lack of it isn't an issue, nor should it be.
Reply:You should name a child what you like!

I have a common name, one of the most popular for the year I was born, and always had at least one other girl in my class with my name. That's where nicknames are handy. My best friend also shares my same name, neither of us likes our name, but we like that we share it.

My point is, my name wasn't really common until the year I was born. My parents had heard it, but it caught on quickly. I know lots of other names that have been that way, you just don't know until later how popular a name will be anyway.

Popular names aren't always bad, I found you get teased less since there is more than one, and don't have to constantly tell people how to pronounce it.
Reply:Ava isn't overly common, it's a pretty name and great if you like Ava Gardener.

I wouldn't base my decision for a name on popularity. I'm naming my son Aureliano, after a character in a book I like and as a way he can celebrate his father's S. American heritage. (the story is set in Colombia, which is the author's home country)
Reply:I wouldn't say Ava is extremely popular as I don't know anyone who has actually used it. Lots of people have it in their 'top 5' list though.

Don't worry about a name being popular. If you like it, it fits with your family and middle/surname names then go for it.

Somewhere down the track everybody is going to know a person/people with the same name.
Reply:Ava Gabor is the only person I remember having the name Ava.

Me thinks you deceiving yourself.
Reply:yes, im using cristian or christian when i have a boy.
Reply:Its Your child i like Ava Grace who cares what other people say!
Reply:I love the name Ava i would go with that
Reply:I won't pick a name that is really overdone, but I really don't think Ava is to that point. Maybe it is more popular where you live.
Reply:Well, I purposely didn't name my kids anything that would be considered strange, but I did try to choose names that would be somewhat unique. I wouldn't want them to be one of 6 kids in their class with the same name, but I am also a teacher and have run across some WEIRD names.

On the other hand, my friend had a baby a month after I did and chose a VERY similar first name and the same middle name for her child. I felt kind of protective, but I guess two people could think of the same name on their own.
Reply:LISTEN= SO WHAT!!! ITS WHAT YOU LIKE NOT ANYONE ELSE! AT THE END OF THE DAY, YOUR HAVING IT SO WHY SHOULDNT YOU BE THE ONE WHO DECIDES THE NAME. I HAVE 3 KIDS AND MY PARTNER WASNT KEEN ON LEWIS. I SAID THAT ITS ME THATS HAVIN IT,ME THATS TAKIN THE PAIN SO I'LL BE THE ONE GETTING LAST SAY. AS LONG AS U LIKE IT THEN THATS ALL THAT COUNTS AND ALL THE NAMES U HAVE CHOSON ARE LOVELY. X.
Reply:yeah if you like the name then use it, it doesnt matter if it is heaps popular it means its a good name. i like heaps of names that are in the top 100 and most of em i liked even before they got popular such as Ella, Eva, Jayden and Ashton
Reply:Ava isn't that popular, go w/ it!
Reply:I seem to be dealing with the same issue. I love the name Jaiden/Jayden, my son is due Nov. 30th. Anywayz, it is extremely popular so people are kinda making me change my mind, but I know the decision is ultimately up to me. So to answer your question. Go with the name you love, no matter how popular.
Reply:I personally dont know anyone named Ava. Ive heard of Asher but not ava. I dont think its that popular of a name. And i think you should follow your heart, if you think Ava is the perfect name go for it, the name you think will be best, may not seem like the best choice now, but in the long run, it will pay off. I say name your child whatever feels right to you =D. Congrats!
Reply:I am into more unique names. Like Shelly and Evelyn, and Travis But if I HAD to. I would name the girl Haley and the boy Matt.
Reply:I would opt to go for something more unique if possible!
Reply:I don't think so. I like old fashioned names. But I wouldn't follow the trend. Seems like everyone names their baby Grace these days.

it's old fashioned, but very trendy, so I'd stay away from it.
Reply:Ava is a very poplar name that is creeping up the top ten list, but if you like go for it. Grace and Cayden are also very pretty. There is always going to be more than one person with the name you choose, so really it's up to you. If you want her to not be in a class with five other girls with the same name, I'd try something a little different, however it won't be hard to find personalized items for her either with a poplar name.
Reply:If you like the name then that is what you should name her. I do know of 4 little girls named Ava, but my daughters name is Madison..... that ended up being very popular as well.... either way I still love her name and dont regret naming her it
Reply:If I was in love with an extremely popular name I think I would just find a different way to spell it. Like Katie for example. I would change the spelling to

Kaytee

Katey

Cadey

Something unique.

I don't think Ava can be changed.. I could only think of

Avah

Ayvah

or

Aiva.

Have fun with it!

Good luck! =]
Reply:Hello everyone.... Ava is #5 on the Social Security list of top names in 2006.... Everybody is using it! Personally, when I think of a name I like I look at the top 1000 names on the Social Security register - if it's on there at all, I remove it from my name list. I'm not even crazy about using a common name as a middle name.
Reply:I think some names are more popular in some areas than others. A good friend of mine has a daughter named Ava and she is the only one I know of or heard of. I think if you like a name, use it no matter how popular it is. I would. Good luck in your decision.
Reply:ok lets say if u named your baby Katelyn...see its a different name...but like when the baby get older and she doesn't like the name Katelyn anymore..she can just say her name is kate...so that she doesnt have to change her name..if she sees that a lot of people have her name...so like basicly what im trying to say is that try and go for a name that you can aslo make into a nickname..but yet if still makes sense
Reply:I don't like 'made up' names, but I also wouldn't use a name that was really common either.

But, if you like it, who cares? I think you don't need to worry about if it is used a lot in general, just think if anyone else in your family or friends circle has used it. Then I think it makes it a no-go. Depends where you come from. So far no one here thinks it's common, I am from Australia, and Ava was number one on my baby names list 3 years ago, but now every second little girl here is called either Ava, Eva or Ella.
Reply:I love Ava. I think it's beautiful. I think it's more important that you love the name, then how popular it is. You can go to the social security website, and see how popular the name is in your state.

I love Ava Grace, I can not think of two names that sound so good together.

Grace is beautiful.

Annelise, Annette, Hannah and Charissa all mean Grace

I love Elizabeth, I think it's pretty

Katie, is okay, I would go with Kathleen, Katherine, Katelyn, and call her Katie

Bell and Bella is cute. I like Belladonna, Isabella, Rosabella, Isabelle, and Annabelle, and call the belle or Bella

Cayden is okay, I like Hayden much better

I would go with a name you love.
Reply:Yeah I would. Ava Evangeline
Reply:I definitely would NOT give my child a name like that because I have a name like that and hate it. It's completely useless as a name. When I would sit in a classroom and hear the teacher call my name, I wouldn't even bother responding because I knew that one of the other 2-4 girls in the class with the same name would answer. When I was in the hallway and heard someone calling my name, I'd never even bother to turn my head because I knew that there was only a 1 in 20 chance that the person was referring to me and not one of the other 19 girls with my name. If I heard someone call me by the short version of my name, that made the odds more like 1 in 35. In my circle of friends, 3 of us have the same name. Ridiculous. It's a pretty name, but I might as well have been called "Hey, you!"
Reply:haven't heard of too many Avas. personally i like the name.

Ava Grace

Ava Elizabeth

very pretty
Reply:If you like it, go with it. The only reason to not go with it is if you have a family member with that name- or a close friend.
Reply:i've heard that name alot among the celeb's! but it's cute, i love the name shiloh but angelina jolie had to go steal it! so i don't think i'll use it anymore, it just seems weird
